Originating from New York City and presently working out of Memphis Jonathan Postal has been making photographs pretty much his whole life. His diverse portfolio transverces editorial to commercial to art. Working for such clients as Vanity Fair & Max Factor covering subjects as diverse as Lil’ Jon to Bill Clinton with his personal art always a work in progress.

Jonathan studied at the San Francisco Art Institute where he received his BFA in photography. The next several years were spent woring as a musician, primarily with The Readymades and The Gift. Actively continuing to make photographs Postal was expanding his portfolio of early counter culture icons while shooting for Rolling Stone, New West Magazine & CBS Records. Returning to NYC he shot for the Soho Weekly News while freelancing for various NYC & national clients.

Postal then moved to Milan to shoot fashion & advertising. After two years he relocated again, (this time to London) where he photographed editorial & advertising projects. It was there that Postal became associated with The Black & White Gallery. While living in London Postal concurently worked in the USA. During a six month residence in Australia a profile of Postal and his work was published in Australian Professional Photographer.

Postal returned to the USA, residing in New Orleans where he worked commercially & exhibited his fine art photography at various galleries (reviews available upon request).

Postal then found a home in Memphis. He won the Memphis Arts Festival’s Best of Photography Award three times and is in the permanent collections of the City of Memphis and the City of Nashville as well as The Arkansas Arts Center (which is actually a museum). Postal was featured in the Dixon Museum’s traveling exhibition “Visualizing the Blues”, which traveled & exhibited worldwide. After serving as Creative Director of Eye Magazine & Photo Editor of Towery Publications he won a national ADDIE award for the photography work he created for the Humane Society.

Accepting the position of photographer for The Miami New Times he lived & worked in Miami for three years. Simultaneously Postal taught at the Art Institute of Miami, developing their Digital Photography Program.

Returning to Memphis, Postal finished one year of the Masters Program at The Memphis College of Art. With Mary Postal he designed and photographed campaigns for St Blues Guitars and Cooper Young Festival.

Postal has been profiled in RSVP Magazine and conceived and shot a photographic essay for Memphis Magazine.

Jonathan Postal was featured in the Artist Series produced by Live From Memphis for Arts Memphis TV. He regularly publishes the visual blog Going Postal on the Live From Memphis site.

He lives with his wife, the artist Mary Long-Postal & Hank IVtheir dog.
